With four days of Royal Ascot left, the bookies will be hoping that results turn improve significantly on day one.

French trained 11/8 (2.375) jolly Goldikova opened proceedings on a positive note for jolly backers and successes by the Richard Hannon trained and Richard Hughes ridden Strong Suit and Canford Cliffs – who 4to1.com had touted as one of the bets of the week and started at a quite outstanding 11/4 (3.75) - also went against against the chalkmen.

The victories of Equiano and Marine Commando – who were both 9/2 shots - did not help matters for the bookies and even Junior, who led from start to finish in the marathon Ascot Stakes, was not unexpected.

One of the most open handicaps of the season and feature of Wednesday’s card is the Royal Hunt Cup, in which Irish raider Dandy Boy heads the morning markets at around 8/1.

But at odds of 20/1 Docofthebay – who was runner up in the race a couple of years ago – looks a very sporting each way bet.

Elsewhere on a card, where the market leaders look like being around the 3/1 (4.00) chances, the Hannon-Hughes combination have a couple of lively and nicely priced prospects in the 15.05 Windsor Forest Stakes and 17.35 Sandringham Stakes.

The Shamwari Lodge and Pollenator double pays around 70/1 at commonly available odds and you will be unlucky not to get a run for your monies given the current form of the trainer and jockey.

We will not be making any recommendations at Royal Ascot, but there are couple that take our fancy at Ripon's evening meeting.

The draw, which was so evident at sunny Royal Ascot, should not be a factor at Ripon.

The suggested bet is a win single on our 19.20 selection and an each way bet on our 20.50 selection with a half stake each way double – which would return odds of over 200/1 were they both to win and 12/1 if they both run into a place.

That would be a total outlay of just £4 to a £1 unit stake.
