Few Enjoying Play At The Beach

Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell heads the U.S Open going into the weekend.

McDowell, who posted his second round 3-under par early on an overcast day at Pebble Beach, Friday, saw a major threat loom during the afternoon as Phil Mickelson shot a best of the tournament 66, to move to 1-under par and the bookies 2/1 (3.00) favourite.

McDowell, who has a two–shot lead, gets a 6/1 quote, along with another major winner Ernie Els – who is alongside Mickelson at 1-under the card. 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa and Dustin Johnson, who has won the last two times in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am are on the same mark.

Lefty would probably take the 1-under par as his 72-hole total now, as he stated “There's no way under par is going to win here," after the opening round.

World No.1 Tiger Woods will need a Mickelson type move and hope that those in front of him do not go lower, if he is to get into contention.

Tiger is seven shots off the leader and although the 25/1 quote may look attractive, Woods has never won a major when trailing by more than six shots going into the weekend.

Asked if he liked his positions, Woods replied, "Absolutely."

One of the big stories of the day was the performance of Tom Watson, who won his only U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 1982. Watson made par on the last hole to follow his 78 with a 71 and make the cut at 7-over.

Paul Casey shot a 73 and was at even-par 142, along with Brendon De Jonge, Alex Cejka and Jerry Kelly.

Two dozen players were separated by just six shots, a group that included Lee Westwood, who played with Els and Woods.

Westwood scrambled for a 71 on a day he thought would be the easiest of the week.

"I don't think anybody's going to run away with this," Westwood said.

We are in full agreement and will be taking a look at the outright odds as well as attempting to follow up our Thursday successes with our two-ball selections from 7.00 am local (15.00 London).

We think there are two players, who are both major winners, slightly overpriced in Saturday’s two balls.

Two single bets are suggested and details are below.
11.50 LOCAL (19.50 London)
BEN CURTIS at odds of 11/10 v Rhys Davies
Ten minutes later
DAVID DUVAL 7/4 (2.75) vs Robert Karlsson
